Preservation : Caring a Record

Preservation

Handling

Record should be handled with clean hands at the outer edge and areas covered by a label. Here, its should be taken to not touch the grooved playing surface. Touching the playing surface can transfer oils and dirt in the grooves which can attract dust particles leading damage during playback or mold growth.

Storage

Original sleeves made of plastic should be substituted with a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sleeve. Also, paper sleeves containing text or graphics can be preserved along with the record as long as the disc itself is encased in the HDPE sleeve. Moreover, the record should be stored vertically with full-height dividers every 4-6 inches to minimize warping and on sturdy shelving that can handle up to fifty pounds of weight per shelf foot in related to the weight of the records. In addition, the records should be kept in a dark, clean environment away from UV sources, with minimum temperature between 65-70 and a relative humidity (RH) of no greater than 50%. Here, both temperature and humidity should not fluctuate more than 10c or 10% in a 24 hour time span. It is known to be ideal that the record should be stored in an even more stable environment with cooler temperature here.

Playback

The condition of the playback equipment is very important in order to preserve of the records which is the equipment required for an the record is turntable. It is important to have a turntable that will play the correct record speed during playback. Also, the stylus which is known as part of turntable must be free from dust. The stylus will erode the grooved walls that cause a loss of information if the tone arm exerts too much force, while the stylus will bounce around in the groove if the tone arm is not exerting enough force here.

Cleaning

It is important that the record is clean and free of dust particles and other dirt when playing it back. Dirt on the surface may damage the playing surfaces as the stylus moves across it and cause a loss in sound quality that sounds like a tick or pop. Also, it is should be cleaned before and after playback with a dry and wet cleaning methods that affect its effectiveness in the cleaning. Dry methods involve removing dirt and debris with a brush, while a wet methods are about applying a solution to the record to remove dirt and debris.

Let`s Reflect on Memories  !

History...

Do you know that phonograph record once become a phenomenon....

Phonograph record can also known as a gramophone record, vinyl record which refers to vinyl that material most commonly used after 1950, or colloquially. Here, "a record" is defined as an analog sound storage medium that consisting of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc.

Phonograph records were the primary medium used for music reproduction for most of the 20th century and replacing the phonograph cylinder. This cylinder had co-existed in the 1920s. Furthermore, digital media had gained a larger market share by the late 1980s, and lead to the vinyl record left the mainstream in 1991.
